The Douglas X-3 Stiletto in flight. It was intended to test concepts for sustained supersonic flight. It struggled due to engine power issues to achieve its design goal of Mach 2, but it did pioneer design concepts that found their way into the Lockheed Starfighter.

Still hope to make it over to the R&D hangar at Wright Patterson to see it. I didn’t get to see that hangar the last time I was there. The X-3 is one of the more interesting looking X planes, even if roll inertia coupling made it a handful to fly.

You’re sort of too late. The R&D hangar is no more, but in it’s place is the new 4th hangar (which I think is supposed to open this month?) and it’s going to be a cool place:

A quick search didn’t turn up any info, but I wonder if this had manual flight controls. If they weren’t power assisted the yoke would have been useful for added leverage.

Easier to apply full force from both arms for pitch control, easier to apply force in roll by rotating a column than by pushing a stick sideways. I suppose it depends on the control linkages.

This is what I get for posting without thinking first. A yoke makes more sense if the flight controls are unboosted, which I'm guessing they probably were.
